2 - Darius Guppy Responds To Peter Stanford

Below is the response which Darius Guppy made to Mr Peter Stanford’s approach to him.

In short, DG understood instinctively that Mr Stanford’s representations were in bad faith and did not fall into the trap set for him. Nevertheless, he saw no point in being rude to the man and it would be difficult to imagine a more politely worded response.

Dear Mr Stanford,

Thank you for your extremely polite letter.

I feel indebted to the Telegraph since it published not too long ago - and courageously it seems to me considering my argument - an essay in which I demonstrated how the activities of bankers and counterfeiters were conceptually identical.

In tandem with this piece, it also published an interview which I considered fair and responsible.

I admit therefore to feeling bad about declining your invitation and hope that you do not take it personally.

Please understand - I very rarely grant interviews precisely because nothing is more easy than to quote someone out of context or twist things to impart meanings the exact opposite of those intended; not that I am suggesting this would be your style remotely. I am simply explaining my default position.

It is for this reason that I prefer to write essays - because the contents speak for themselves.

I can only repeat my apology and wish you - in all sincerity - the best of luck.

Kind regards,

Darius Guppy
